Hair Toppers & Clip-in Bangs
Hair toppers or wiglets are increasing in popularity as are clip-in bangs, and no wonder, both are simple to install and provide the look that many of us are aiming for. Hair toppers are specifically designed to give a fuller look to thinning hair on the top of the head. Clip in bangs let you experience bangs without the commitment of cutting your hair.
Hair Topper
What is a Hair Topper?
A hair topper is also known as a wiglet, top piece, or hair enhancer. A hair topper is lightweight and easy to install. The lace base of the hair topper is breathable and the strands of hair are hand tied to the base. Compared to wigs, hair toppers cover a smaller surface and clips sewn onto the hair topper are used to secure it to your own hair. They are available in different sizes, shapes, styles and lengths, to suit the needs of the wearer.
What is the Purpose of a Hair Topper?
There are basically two purposes to a hair topper. The first and main purpose is to help conceal thinning hair or hair loss. There are different reasons why a woman may be experiencing challenges with her hair and if you would like to read more about this check our two blogs Hair Loss Pt1 & Hair Loss Pt 2. Other women simply have thinner or finer hair and desire a more voluminous look. Whatever your reason for purchasing a hair topper it will certainly do the job, by enhancing the look of your hair.
Hair toppers are not recommended for women with total hair loss as the design of the topper is just that, a topper, covering the top of your head. Women with total hair loss may want to look into the option of a lace wig (Choosing Your Lace Wig).
How is a Hair Topper Maintained?
Your hair topper does not need to be washed as often as your own hair, the natural oils from your scalp do not affect it as much as they do your own hair. If you wear your topper every day, the recommendation is to wash it every two weeks. If you do not wear it as frequently then wash it less often. If you wash your hair topper too often, it’s life span will be reduced.
When shampooing your topper:
Use a wide tooth comb to remove tangles;
Close the stopper in your sink and hold the cap of the topper so it is face up;
Turn on the water, making sure it is cool or lukewarm and place a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo on the base of the cap;
Gently massage the base (very gently);
Once the cap is clean, immerse the topper in the soapy water that has collected and gently massage the hair;
When the topper is clean, let out the soapy water and rinse thoroughly under cool or lukewarm water until the water runs clear;
Apply conditioner on the hair only, avoiding the roots and topper cap;
With your fingers, work the conditioner through the topper and let sit for a couple of minutes;
Rinse out the conditioner thoroughly under lukewarm water so all the residue is out;
Roll the topper in a towel and press down on the towel to absorb the excess water;
On a dry towel, lay out your topper and let it dry;
If you choose to use a heat tool, make sure the temperature is no higher than 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
How Long do Hair Toppers Last?
Hair toppers normally last anywhere from six months to over one year depending on the care and maintenance given to it. Using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners will be gentle on your topper and extend its life span. Every few months treat your topper to a deep conditioning, this will help the hair to remain soft and nourished.
Another idea is to keep your hair topper in a box when you are not wearing it, this will keep it free from dust and safe from any chance of being damaged.
Can a Hair Topper be Dyed?
Yes they can. The best recommendation would be to consult with your hair stylist or a wig specialist as they will be the best person to match your topper to your hair color.
